That’s one way to end a show!
After months of speculation and years of hoping and praying, it happened during last night’s episode of FS1’s WWE Backstage, a weekly panel show discussing the hottest stories in WWE. In the closing moments of the show, Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality” came over the sound system and, yup, CM Punk trotted down to the commentary table.
Punk waited until the camera was squarely on him before saying, “It’s as simple as this – just when they think they’ve got the answers, I change the culture. I’ll see you here next week!” This was both a declaration that the former competitor has joined the show as guest panel, but also an homage to his character inside the squared-circle.
The WWE on Fox Twitter handle was quick to confirm that Punk will be making occasional appearances on WWE Backstage starting next Tuesday, November 19. While it’s fantastic to see him working with WWE once again, there are no rumors that he will see in-ring activity at this time. Punk himself has stated he’s not too keen to enter competition again.
CM Punk had an enviable career within WWE. His accolades include being a 3x World Heavyweight Champion, 2x WWE Champion, 1x Intercontinental Champion, 1x World Tag Team Champion and 1x ECW Champion; as well as being Mr. Money in the Back 2008 and 2009 and the recipient of seven Slammy Awards. Performing on the main roster from 2006 to 2014, Punk saw a whirlwind of controversy surrounding his dismissal from the largest wrestling company in the world.
Following his first run with WWE, Punk tried his hand at professional mixed martial arts. He saw a 0-2 record within UFC before also being dismissed by Dana White. Punk currently sits at the commentary table at Atlantic City’s CFFC (Cage Fury Fighting Championships). Perhaps his time as an announcer for that company has increased his talent as a commentator, so much so that WWE was impressed enough to take him back.
